The Coal Miner came to me in late winter while living in an apartment just outside Dinkytown in Minneapolis, MN with my girlfriend at the time. She was the first person I would always play my new songs for and would always be brutally honest with me about her opinion. As painful as it was at times to hear she didn't like a new song I had been working diligently on it made it that much more exciting when she wept the first time I played this song for her. Working a monotonous job as a bank Teller was my coal mine at the time and for her, in my first real love, it was "worth it."
