about

Paul Marino and I loaded up my VW to the extent that we couldn't even fit an extra sweater in the backseat and set off for the west coast on an adventure. Driving in parallel to Rogue Valley Band (who's four season album masterpiece also happened to be my traveling companion for 4 months on the road) across the rocky mountains we all all convened for a night in Vegas and managed to have a blast on a musicians budget which was 3 dollars each for a tall PBR. After recording drums and Bass in Los Angeles Paul and I continued up the PCH (pacific coast highway) along the majestic cliffs of Big Sir and Half Moon, over the Golden Gate bridge and across wine country to a fog hidden Mendocino among jaunting redwoods and jagged coastlines. Over the next week we would record all the acoustic guitars and a good portion of the vocals while taking breaks to eat kale, mountain bike to lost waterfalls, and share stories with locals at The Pub. On the drive back we drove for 40 hours straight to get to Minneapolis, through an October snow storm where we saw a cougar and a herd of wild antelope.

Goldfish Diaries was the second to last song I wrote for the album, which was added to the line-up about a week before I left for tour in August 2011 and musically reminds me of the vibe of Mendicino, which may now be recorded in my opinion as the most beautiful land on earth.

lyrics

You caught me like a fish in muddy water
blind to the meat I was chasing, racing after
I couldn't breathe, I couldn't speak though my lips were moving

When you love someone it's always the first time
hanging on a string
Viewing the world from the topside
swimming in the breeze

You cut me like a badass fisherwoman
blind to the meat these drying tears of salt and sand
I couldn't breathe, I couldn't speak through my lips were moving

When you love someone it's always the first time
hanging on a string
Viewing the world from the topside
swimming in the breeze

Would rather struggle for air than be thrown back in the water without you
Now the scars have faded; again I search for a hook in murky blue
I couldn't breathe, I couldn't speak though my lips were moving

When you love someone it's always the first time
hanging on a string
Viewing the world from the topside
swimming in the breeze
